Saying goodbye on Saturday, December 3.  All welcome.

The Wissell family will be saying goodbye to their son and brother on Saturday, December 3 at St Cuthbert’s Anglican Church (https://stcuthbertsleaside.com/) @ 12:00 (noon). Ethan specifically wanted his service held at St Cuthbert’s (where he was baptized) as Ian LaFleur the priest-in-charge visited Ethan often at PMH patiently speaking with and helping Ethan as he considered the reality of his own mortality. All faiths are of course very welcome to attend.Following the service we will be inviting all who care to attend back to our home. Another request from our son. He felt strongly that a hall or reception area was not how he wanted his friends and family to gather but rather would much prefer we did so here at our home where our family was so very happy.

Anyone who would like to come and celebrate the extraordinary life of Ethan Wissell is welcome to attend the service and/or drop by our home in the afternoon.

St Cuthbert’s address: 1399 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M4G 3A6. 12:00 pm (noon)

Wissell home address: 428 Heath Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M4G 1B5. Following service (1:30 to 5:00)

  9. Dear Wissell Family,

You are in our thoughts and prayers. The Wiess College and Rice University family here in Houston miss him very much. He always radiated joy and studied diligently at breakfast in the commons.

His cancer fight affirms his incredible strength and his amazingly supportive family.

    Much love, always.

  11. Dear Wissell family,

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Ethan’s passing and his unjust battle with cancer. To this day, I can still vividly picture Ethan in grade 4. He had the greatest smile, and his eyes always lit up with excitement at the prospect of learning or discovering something new. He was such a nice, sweet, caring boy, and so bright!
I am so sorry for your loss. An incredible person who left a lasting impression on us all. My heart is heavy and very sad. I wish you all my sincerest condolences. R.I.P. Ethan Wissell.

I was both shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Ethan’s passing, as I hadn’t been aware of his diagnosis or fight. Having just found his blog as well, I was awed and so proud of his creative use of this medium as a vehicle to process his hopes and fears about treatment, and wrestle with dichotomy of life’s beauty and fun despite its deep unfairness in his case. Reading the comments of his many followers, I was struck by how sharing his observations on his fight, made a difference and significantly impacted so many around the world. Through his blog, the spirit behind his words will continue doing so into the future.
I had the pleasure of working with Ethan about 3 years ago, when he was considering university options for undergrad and perhaps future medical studies. I was delighted by his choice of Rice University and I hope he benefitted from his too-short time there. He would have made a splendid physician indeed.
My deepest sympathies to you, to his brothers and extended family, and to his many friends.
