Following the good news we heard yesterday about the state of my disease, I wanted to make an update today to kind of shed some light on what remission really means. Although this certainly is good news, remission is a long, long way away from being healthy.
As of now, we know that fewer than 5% of bone marrow cells are blast cells. While it is possible that some of these cells are cancerous, there is no sign of disease within the bone marrow. The more specific term for where I am right now is “Complete remission”, the word complete being used pretty arbitratily as I am not necessary in complete remission but thats what they call it. There are deeper stages of remission beyond CR, and well find out soon if we are in one of those stages or not but as for now we can proceed with the bone marrow transplant.
As much as I have researched these definitions recently, Im still not even 100% sure where I am right now but I know were on the right track.
More news to come.
Still fighting,
Ethan Wissell
