July 8th, 2016

Bad news today. Unfortunately, neither one of my brothers is a full bone marrow match, and so they’ve got to go looking for a high quality match within the general public. Fortunately, right now it looks like there is a good chance of finding an unrelated full match donor.

My white cell count hasn’t been going down at all over the last few days. Today it’s at 1.9. It looks like the second round of chemo has done all of its damage at this point. I’m in a bit of a frustrating position now though, because I want to get more chemo so we can achieve some kind of remission, but they can’t just give me chemo all he time because I have other organs to worry about. So I’ve just got to wait at this point.

On the bright side, I get to go home again this weekend, maybe even overnight for one night. It would be nice to sleep in my own bed for once.

Still fighting,

Ethan Wissell

  1. Ethan, while I’m happy you may get to go home over the weekend, I’m really sorry for your bad news. Randy and I were so hoping one of your brothers would be a match. We will now start to pray they find a match from the general public. That’s also bad news about the chemo. You deserve some home cooking, pie and your own bed. Love from Texas, Sharon and Randy

  2. Hi Ethan, Kash family here. Although I’m sure it’s not the news you were hoping for, 75% of all stem cell matches are found in the community, with Canadian Blood Services noting that the matches are from male donors between the ages of 17 and 35; so they will find your match. Please post if a donor drive is run for you, we would definitely all come out and get tested. Have a great weekend.

  3. Hey Ethan – sorry to hear about this temporary set-back.
Your Uncle Brian has some pretty good marketing skills and is willing to assist in any way if there is going to be a ‘Donor Match Drive’ in your name; just say the word.
In the meantime rest up, keep you positive attitude intact and of course, continue to fight on, Warrior!
    Love from Sudbury.
