The last couple of days I’ve been able to come home during the daytime since I don’t need to be at the hospital for anything until I get my 10 pm medication. It’s a nice break from the usual routine, and a nice break from the PMH wifi which is borderline unusable during business hours.
I actually haven’t been connected to my IV for the past few days, which makes getting around much easier. Since I don’t have any drip medication, I can stay capped off as long as I drink a lot of water.
There have been some developments in terms of my treatment plan. Dr. Gupta is still on leave, so the top dog in the hematology unit right now is Dr. Shu. He has apparently written letters to request approval for a drug that isn’t typically used to see if it can get me into remission. We’ll be meeting with him tomorrow to ask about this drug, and about other potential directions and why he chose this one. Knowledge is power.
I’ll post another update tomorrow after I speak to Dr. Shu
Still fighting,
Ethan Wissell
Hey Ethan! Been following the developments as you post them. Lots of ups and downs – we are thinking of you and your fam. Sorry I missed you Sunday – it would have been great to see you outside of PMH. My offer still stands – if you want me to contact my friend the Prof in UofT’s Pharmacy Programme just let me know.

Hi Ethan –
You will not recall me by my name. Believe it or not I was your waitress a couple of nights ago at The Keg Steakhouse when your family came in for dinner.
I truly enjoy my job because I get to cross paths with so many different kinds of people, each with their own stories. That particular evening you and your family intrigued me, though you left the restaurant before I could ask for your story. I’m grateful that your parents mentioned this blog to me before joining you boys for a movie.
I’ve spent a bit of time reading through your blog posts. You are a trooper!! Just wanted to throw this out there — Next time you get a ‘free pass’ from PMH, swing by our restaurant. Your next “half-pint” of beer is on me! Best of luck on your recovery Ethan.
Sending positive vibes your way,
A waitress (my name is Teresa) who cares 🙂
